Why Bleach Does Not Fix Bathroom Mould and What Actually Works

Bleach whitens surface mould on bathroom grout but does not fix it. The mould roots survive in the porous grout and regrow, often within days. Bleach whitens surface mould on bathroom grout. It does not fix it. The mould appears gone because the surface discolouration is removed, but the roots survive inside the porous grout. Within a few days, sometimes within hours in a humid bathroom, the dark lines return.

The approach that works is different in sequence and chemistry. A bicarbonate of soda paste scrub removes the built-up grime first. Then vinegar, applied separately, penetrates the grout pores and treats the mould closer to the root. These two products are used in sequence, not mixed together. Combined, they neutralise each other and do neither job.

Why bleach appears to work but does not

Bleach contains sodium hypochlorite, which is an oxidising agent. When applied to mould on grout, it bleaches the pigment from the mould cells on the surface, which removes the visible discolouration. The grout looks white again. This is mistaken for the mould being killed.

Two things work against this result. First, the mould roots, known as hyphae, extend below the surface of the grout. The bleach solution is too thick to penetrate deeply enough to reach them. The surface mould is whitened while the root system remains intact and continues to grow. Second, bleach is a water-based solution. Applied to porous grout, it adds moisture to the exact surface where mould grows best. In the days after a bleach treatment, the grout has been whitened at the surface and slightly remoistened at depth. The conditions for regrowth are, if anything, slightly improved.

Queensland Health notes that mould on building surfaces can represent a health concern for occupants, particularly those with respiratory conditions, and that addressing moisture at the source is the key factor in managing it long term. Surface treatments alone are not a solution when the underlying conditions favour regrowth.

This is not a criticism of bleach as a product. It is effective at what it does, which is surface disinfection and stain removal on non-porous surfaces. Bathroom grout is a porous surface. The mismatch between the product and the surface is why the result does not last.


Why grout is the problem surface

Grout is a cement-based material. It is porous by nature, which means it has a structure of tiny interconnected channels that absorb water, soap residue, skin cells, and cleaning product residue over time. This accumulated organic material inside the pores is what mould feeds on.

The porosity of grout also means that anything applied to the surface faces the same penetration challenge that makes bleach ineffective. Products need to be in a form that can move into the pore structure rather than sitting on the surface. This is why the viscosity and acidity of the product matters, not just its antimicrobial properties.

Sealed grout has a surface coating that reduces porosity and makes cleaning easier. Most grout in older Queensland bathrooms, and much grout in newer bathrooms where the sealer has worn off, is unsealed. If you are unsure whether your grout is sealed, apply a small drop of water to the surface. If it absorbs within a minute or two, the grout is unsealed.


What vinegar does differently

White vinegar is a dilute solution of acetic acid, typically at 4 to 8 percent concentration. Acetic acid is a smaller molecule than sodium hypochlorite and penetrates porous surfaces more effectively. Applied to grout, it reaches further into the pore structure than bleach can.

Vinegar kills most common bathroom mould species by disrupting the pH environment in which they survive. It is not a disinfectant in the clinical sense, and it does not kill all mould species. Some moulds, including certain Aspergillus and Penicillium species, are more resistant to acetic acid. Research published in the International Journal of Food Microbiology has examined the antifungal properties of acetic acid and found it effective against a range of fungal strains at concentrations consistent with household vinegar. The honest limit is that vinegar reduces recurrence and kills most common bathroom mould. It is not a permanent solution if the moisture conditions are not also addressed.

The practical difference between bleach and vinegar for grout mould is not that vinegar is dramatically stronger. It is that vinegar's acidity and penetration properties make it more appropriate for porous surfaces, so the result lasts longer. A bathroom treated with vinegar and then kept well-ventilated will typically remain mould-free for significantly longer than one treated with bleach under the same conditions.


How to use bicarbonate of soda and vinegar correctly

These two products are not used together. Combined, bicarbonate of soda (an alkali) and vinegar (an acid) neutralise each other through a rapid acid-base reaction, producing mostly water and carbon dioxide. The fizzing that occurs when they are mixed looks active but produces a solution that is weaker than either product used alone. Do not mix them.

They are used in sequence, with each doing a different job.

Step one: bicarbonate of soda paste for grime removal. Mix bicarbonate of soda with a small amount of water to form a thick paste. Apply it to the affected grout and scrub with a grout brush or stiff-bristled brush. The paste is mildly abrasive and alkaline, which lifts soap scum, mineral deposits, and the organic grime that the mould is feeding on. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry, or at minimum wipe down the surface, before moving to step two.

Step two: vinegar for mould treatment. Apply undiluted white vinegar to the cleaned grout, either by spray or direct application. Allow it to sit for at least thirty minutes, longer if the mould is established. Scrub again with the grout brush and rinse. The vinegar penetrates the pore structure and addresses the mould closer to the root.

The sequence matters. Grout that still has a film of soap scum and built-up grime is harder for the vinegar to penetrate. Removing the surface grime first with the bicarb paste gives the vinegar better access to the grout itself.

The bathroom that bleach could not fix
